Discover the mystery of legendary love in this famous true story of Khun Nak and her husband Pi Mak. Many movies have been made about this tragic love legend in the Thai and English language. Separated from Pi Mak in the early days of war torn Thailand, a pregnant Khun Nak died during childbirth while her husband was injured in the war. Her love for Pi Mak transcended the mortal world and her loyalty to Pi Mak saw her returning with her dead child to live a life with him when he returned from the battlefield. Unknown to Pi Mak the truth on the death of his wife, everything seemed normal to him even though his friends and villagers tried to warn him of living with a ghost. Khun Nak, angered by the interference of the villagers sought vengeance on them until she was stopped by a famous abbot.
Learn more about this mystery of Mae Nak with a visit to her peculiar shrine which worshippers go to and ask for favours on love, luck and health. Her shrine is well known for granting these favours and many grateful devotees have returned to pay homage to her in the form of gifts from gold to personal dressing items. During your visit to the shrine, you can also perform merit making by releasing live aquatic animals such as fish, frogs, and turtles into the canal which incidentally was the same canal where the doomed couple used to frequent next to their home.
From the shrine, enjoy dinner at a typical Northern Thai restaurant that is mostly frequented only by locals. The cuisine here is known as Khan Tok cuisine where the signature dishes are a Khan Tok specialty with a variety of chili paste, vegetable condiments, northern sausage and pork rind are served, a special rice dish known as Khao Kan Jin a very rare item and Northern styled noodles.
After dinner, proceed to the famous Talad Rot Fai or Train Market. This weekend market is filled with stores and vendors selling clothing, toys, shoes, souvenirs, second hand goods and plenty of food. Try a very traditional dessert which is found only here and made the olden way. Walk the market to browse or shop before ending your day.
